Joseph Paul Bonfiglio, 91, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2020, at Cypress Palms of Largo, Florida.
Born on March 2, 1929, in Conshohocken, PA, he was the second child of Guiseppe and Frances Bonfiglio. He had an older sister, Grace.
As a young man, Joe was an avid dancer. He met his future wife Irene Manazer at a dance hall doing the jitterbug in Atlantic City. In 1956, they married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ambler. They moved in to a home on Shaw Avenue in Lansdale where Irene gave birth to their first two children, Frances Ann and Donna Maria. In 1961, they moved to a house on Wissahickon Avenue, where she gave birth to their son, Joseph Thomas. Joe and his wife raised their family in that home and continued to live there until 2020. They were lifelong parishioners at St. Stanislaus’s Parish in Lansdale, and the church was a big part of their life.
A hard worker, Joe started at the Acme as a bag boy at 16 years old. He moved to the A&P in Ambler, where he then spent 45 years in the grocery business, moving up through the ranks to become an assistant manager at the Devon Super Fresh. He was beloved by his employees and was a mainstay of the business.
Joe was a true family man, and loved spending time with them, playing golf, pinochle, and watching Philadelphia sports. His love for sports on TV translated into his personal life too, where he encouraged all of his children and grandchildren to play sports, and was a faithful attendant at their games all across the state. His children have fond memories of spending summer vacations at the beach in Ocean City, NJ.
Towards the end his life, Joe and Irene became snowbirds and moved south to Largo, FL to spend their winters, where he became a shuffle boarder and built a community of friends. He loved the sun and warm weather and the slow pace of life. In his last year, he moved into the Cypress Palms assisted living facility, a short distance from their home in Largo.
Joe is survived by his loving wife Irene and his three children, Frances Tomei and her husband Phil of Irwin, PA, Donna Bonfiglio-Miller and her husband, Tim, of Phoenixville, PA, and Joseph Bonfiglio and his wife, Christine, of Collegeville, PA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Alison Goss, of Warrior’s Mark, PA, Ryan Tomei of Wexford, PA, Emily Miller, of Yuhzno-Sakhalinsk, Russia, Patrick Miller, of Philadelphia, PA, Robert Knoll, of Royersford, PA, Joseph Bonfiglio of Silver Spring, MD, Brian Levengood of Denver, CO, and Michael Bonfiglio of Collegeville, PA, and two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Olivia Goss. He was predeceased by his sister, Grace Santangelo.

I was lucky to meet Joe and Irene when I moved into their neighborhood in Largo five years ago. While I didn’t get to know Joe as well as I would have liked, I will remember him as a sweet and charming man. I remember leaving my dog Lucy with him in the kitchen one day while Irene and I stepped outside for a few minutes. When I came back Joe and Lucy were both eating cereal with milk. She was just a puppy and I think the bowl was bigger than her! It really warmed my heart and I will cherish that image always. I’m sure Joe will be missed by many loved ones. You all have my heartfelt sympathies.
