Mr. Edward Magil, age 80, of North Wales, PA and Longport, NJ peacefully passed away after a brief illness on August 18, 2022. Ed’s devotion to his family, friends and sports was never in doubt. He was genuinely loved by all and known for his willingness to assist anyone in need. Ed’s kindness and support of others was limitless.
Born January 4, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Mary Ellen Ryan and Elias Magil, he was the loving husband to Patricia (Pam) Gibbons Magil with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. He is also survived by his beloved daughters Stacey Suter (Ross) and Beth Gray (Rob). Ed was also the devoted “Pop-Pop” to his six grandchildren, Kelsey, Ellie, Christian, Ryan, Molly and Katie. Beyond his immediate family Ed will be missed by his countless friends from all stages of life.
Ed was a proud member of the Malvern Preparatory class of 1961. Ed never forgot his Malvern roots, returning there for years attending the Men in Malvern retreat and continually donating to the scholarship fund. After Malvern, Ed attended Temple University. While he was officially a member of the Class of 1965, Ed, in typical Ed fashion, completed his graduation requirements in 3 ½ years. As with Malvern, Ed never forgot his Temple roots and was a proud member of the Owl Club and an active member of the Temple Alumni Association. After graduation, Ed worked as a National Accounts manager for Colgate Palmolive where he retired after a thirty-five year career.
Ed always put his family first and made every effort to get home for the important moments. Indeed, Ed was the personification of loyalty and devotion to his family. He was the ultimate dad to his girls Stacey and Beth. Despite his time constraints due to constant traveling, Ed still found time to coach the girls in basketball and softball and make all the dad-daughter dances, no matter how awkward.
Upon retirement Ed devoted his time pursuing the things that were most important to him — family and Philly sports. As an avid supporter of the Temple Owls, he cultivated many friendships while cheering on his beloved Owls on the football field and on the basketball court, often traveling to see the Cherry and White play in the NCAA tournament and bowl games. Ed was also a loyal season ticket holder for both the Phillies and Eagles. He could always be seen attending these games with Pam. He was often seen on TV sporting his favorite green Phillies cap. Whether the teams were up or down Ed and Pam never wavered in their support.
Ed cherished his role of Pop-Pop to his six grandchildren. He was a babysitter in the early years; cheerleader in all their activities; and even a chauffeur. His greatest joy was taking his grandchildren to Disney World over the years. At the end of the day though, his happiest moments were spent with family and friends on the beaches of Margate and Longport. There will long be the memories of: the Fourth of July grilling on the beach in Margate; Friday nights at Smitty’s Clam Bar in Somer Point; the block parties in Longport; and of course the wings from Charlie’s Place.
In addition to his family, Ed had many friends from all stages of his life. Some of his best friends were there from teen to retirement. No doubt he will be remembered as a generous gentleman always willing to jump in and do what was needed. To all who were blessed to have known Ed, everyone would agree on one thing — Ed truly was the personification of simply a “great guy” who would do anything for anyone. Every phone conversation with Ed ended with “Hey, you have a good day.” That’s what he would want for everyone.
Relatives and friends are invited to share in Ed’s Life Celebration on Thursday August 25th from 6pm-8pm at Simcox McIlvaine Funeral Home 532 East Main Street Lansdale Pa 19446 and on Friday from 9:30 am -10:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua 259 Forest Ave, Ambler Pa 19002 followed by Mass of Christian burial at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Ed’s name can be made to Malvern Preparatory School Class of 1961 scholarship fund (Malvern Prep Duffy Scholars Fund) or Temple Owl Club Legends Endowment Fund (Robert Silk ℅ Temple University, 1816 N. 15th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19121).
Aunt Pam, Stacey, and Beth-
Uncle Ed will always be part of so many of my special memories. He was best Family Disney Vacation planner and organizer. (Including bonus time in the airport VIP lounge and a photo with Glen Campbell!) He was every bit of a perfect friend to my parents and countless others, and Christmas Eve will never be the same without him. We will all miss you, Uncle Ed.
