Washington Americo Andia Astete
March 31, 1949 – February 1, 2026
The Life of a Provider
Washington Americo Andia Astete, known affectionately as “Flaco” by his beloved wife and “Abuelo” by his grandchildren, passed away at home in North Wales, Pennsylvania, on February 1, 2026. He was 76 years old.
Born on March 31, 1949, to Miguel Ángel Andia Leyva and Marcelina Astete Olarte, Washington’s life was a testament to devotion. As the eldest sibling in Peru, he made the selfless decision to pause his own education to become a pillar of support for his mother and his nine younger siblings. This role as a provider became the hallmark of his character.
After marrying his wife, Flora, in Peru, the couple eventually moved to America, where they shared 50 beautiful years of marriage. Washington brought nothing but a dream for his children and grandchildren, working tirelessly to ensure they had every opportunity he did not.
He spent decades as a cornerstone of the hospitality industry, where his work ethic and high performance earned him consistent praise and professional achievements. Washington was known for his meticulous care and “assistant-to-the-family” approach. He was the man who could fix anything, handle any task, and ensure everyone around him was safe and cared for. For Washington, hospitality wasn’t just a career; it was an extension of his natural desire to serve and protect his family and community.
Passions and Joys
Beyond his hard work, Washington’s absolute favorite things were simple and grounding: eating good food and watching TV. Whether he was catching Kung Fu theater, action movies, or laughing with his family, he was truly at peace when relaxed at home. He was a man of quiet energy, frequently found at the local YMCA where he enjoyed the sauna, hot tub, and swimming. He followed sports with interest, especially soccer, football, and basketball, and was a dedicated member of several clubs, including El Club Wanchino, Club Amauta, and Club Independiente.
At home, he was happiest in the kitchen or surrounded by family. His grandchildren were his greatest pride; he never missed a sporting event or a game, and you could always find him “chilling” on the sidelines, a steady and constant presence for every match. He showed his love through his cooking, always having a pot of Arroz con Pollo or his famous grilled chicken wings ready for them, and nothing made him happier than seeing people enjoy his food.
Strength Through Adversity
Washington’s resilience was legendary. Following the devastating loss of his eldest daughter, Natalia, to breast cancer in 2020, he faced his own battles with both prostate and bladder cancer. He fought through chemotherapy and recovery with incredible determination, remaining active and energy-filled until his final days. His strength served as a rock for his family even during their darkest hours.
