Thomas Moffatt–7/20/2025

Thomas Moffatt, 87 Years old and a residence of St Mary’s Manor in Lansdale, Pennsylvania passed away on July 20, 2025, at Lansdale Jefferson Hospital.

Thomas Moffatt was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 27, 1937 to his parents, James Whalen Moffatt and Elizabeth Moffatt (nee Shields). Tom lived for 75 years in the Juniata Park neighborhood in Philadelphia. Tom attended Hopkinson Elementary, Harding Junior High School and Frankford High School.

One of his earliest decisions was to enlist in the U.S. Army Reserves for an eight year service with six months of Infantry training and seven and a half years of active Reserve Service. Concurrently he started his career in the Optical field, first as an Optical Technician, grinding and polishing lenses, then as an Optician working with companies throughout the Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs. He opened Thomas Moffatt Opticians in 1980 and served the people of Northeast Philadelphia for 25 years. Upon retiring, he went to work at Bachmann Industries repairing Model Trains and Customer Service.

Tom was married to Linda A. Moffatt (nee Hunt) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 17, 1959 at Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the time of Linda’s passing, she and Tom were married 65 years. Linda and Tom were inseparable during their Life together. Linda and Tom spent their entire lives in the City of Philadelphia in the sections of Kensington and Juniata Park. They briefly lived in Mayfair for a few years when they were first married. The last ten years they have resided at St Mary’s Manor in Lansdale, Pennsylvania.

Tom was a lifelong hobbyist, with a special love for Model Railroading, building Models of Cars, Airplanes and Ships. He also did Ceramics and prided himself in producing seasonal window displays at the Optical Store that included operating Train layouts and large ceramic figures. Tom created model Train layouts his whole life and had a full basement layout for many years. Christmas layouts were his favorite, incorporating seasonal themes with ceramic and plastic houses, cars and people along with specialty attractions that visitors and family alike enjoyed for years.

Tom’s happiest moments were with family, family events, picnics, dinners and family vacations to the South New Jersey Shore including Wildwood and Ocean City, as well as Holiday family gatherings and being with friends. Linda and Tom enjoyed Dancing, Live Music and Swimming in the Ocean and time on the beach. Tom enjoyed Sailing in the Ocean and local Lakes.

Linda and Tom participated in the Juniata Park Boys Club social events, helped organize many events and ran Socials for the Juniata Park Boys Club as well as for the Holy Innocents Catholic Church Parish. They also ran many individual Social events for fundraising, Halloween and family vacations and events. Linda enjoyed having parties for Tom’s milestone Birthdays, the Mummers, Cruise Trips and the Philly Phanatic.

Tom is survived by his Son, Thomas J. Moffatt and Barbara F. Moffatt (nee Feeney), his Daughter, Elizabeth Lorenzo (nee Moffatt) and David M. Lorenzo. Five Grandchildren, David M. Lorenzo Jr., Anastasia E. Moffatt, Rachel L. Moffatt, Audrey R. Moffatt and Emma D. Moffatt and Great Grandsons, David M. Lorenzo III and Jace Peter Lorenzo. Tom is also survived by his younger Brother in Law, Walter (Bud) Hunt and Margaret Hunt (nee DeVito) along with Nephews, Paul Hunt, Peter Hunt and Dan Hunt as well as a Sister in Law, Nancy Moffatt of Naples, Florida and her Daughter Melissa Moffatt of Boulder, Colorado.

Tom is predeceased by his parents, James Whalen Moffatt and Elizabeth Moffatt (nee Shields) as well as his In Laws, Walter Merrill Hunt and Elizabeth M. Hunt (nee McLaughlin)and Brother James Moffatt and his Niece Denise Moffatt.

Tom’s Funeral Mass will be held Monday, July 28, 2025, 10:30 am

Visitation is prior to Mass from 9 am to 10:20 am

  1. Tom, Very sorry to hear about your loss. It has been such a joy to work with both Linda and Tom here at Bachmann. Tom Moffatt was a great tech in our repair department for several years and also in taking care of customers. We will miss him.

  2. Tom was a real gentleman, always pleasant, smiling and fun. In addition, he was always the best dressed in “Our Gang”.
    We know he is at peace now with his favorite “Redhead, Linda.

  3. I am lost for words. We were not just in-laws; we were great friends of Moff and Redhead. I am very saddened as I think of 50+ years of togetherness, love, vacations, and family get-togethers. Tom was a fun, happy, kind, and loving person. 💔😢
