John J. Hertz, 73, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at his home in Lansdale, PA.
John, aka Jack to family and friends, was born in Pottsville, Pa., son of the late John and Helen (Gallagher) Hertz.
He is survived by his wife Mary of 46 years; sons Matthew (Shannon), and Michael; grandsons, Jackson and Jayden; sister Deborah Hertz, brother James (Rita); nephews, Steven and Kyle; and his beloved cats, Janette and Chase, who were always at his side.
He was preceded in death by his sister Kathy and brother-in-law Donald Hutt.
John grew up in Royersford, a 1970 graduate of St Pius X High School in Pottstown and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University in 1974. Because employers were looking for people to develop software programs, that became his concentration for 36 years until he retired. He continued his education in Computer Science at Montgomery County Community College because the computer field is constantly changing.
Throughout the years, John worked for several companies and even for a period of time had his own computer company.
But John’s first love was woodworking. He had his own side business, the Wood Shop, and built sheds and furniture for clients. He also participated in craft shows, making children’s’ banks, sports clocks, bird houses, key racks and other items.
He also loved being around cars like Mustangs and had owned a 1973 Mach 1. In his later years he spent the weekends watching NASCAR races on TV.
John’s family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, from 10:30 AM until 11:50 AM, at Simcox McIlvaine Funeral Home, 532 East Main Street, Lansdale, PA 19446, followed by a memorial service 12 Noon.
