Michael P. McCarthy, age 73, of Lansdale, a retired Lansdale Police Detective, died peacefully on September 16th at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Malone, NY, he was the son of the late James and Alva Shields McCarthy and graduated from Franklin Academy High School in Malone and attended American University in Washington, DC. He has lived in Lansdale since 1979.
Michael served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War era from 1961 to 1966
Michael was a police officer in Lansdale for 25 years, retiring as a detective in October, 1996.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lansdale. Michael was also a member of the Fraternal order of Police, lodge 14 and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the oldest and largest Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization. Mike was also a member of the American Legion and the “Rock in Teens” band where he was the lead singer from 1957 to 1961.
Mike’s beloved wife, Patricia A. Buter McCarthy, died on April 27, 2010.
Surviving is his son Michael J. McCarthy of Lansdale and daughter Kelly Ann Barber and her husband Matthew of Northampton and his five beloved grandchildren Hannah, Matthew, Allison, Katie and Shannon. Also surviving are his brothers Teddy McCarthy of Boston and Tom McCarthy of Manchester, CT and his sisters Mary LaBarbe and Joan Stickney both of Malone. He was predeceased by brothers James and Richard McCarthy and sister Betty McCarthy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Wednesday September 21st at 11AM at the Simcox-McIlvaine Funeral Home, 532 E. Main Street, Lansdale, PA. 19446 where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:45AM. Interment private at a later date at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, PA. For those desiring, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mike’s memory to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, 801 Roeder Road, Suite 1000, Silver Spring, MD 20910 would be preferred.
